I wasn’t a complete stranger to electronic and synthesizer music as a young man, but it wasn’t until I bought my first keyboard, a classic Moog Concertmate MG-1 that I began paying more attention. At the time I was getting into Jean-Michel Jarre and Vangelis, so they influenced a lot of what I wrote. I recorded an album of electronic music—the first “song” I wrote was Vertigo—but after that, I was discovering singers like Kate Bush and Elizabeth Fraser (Cocteau Twins), so I started recording vocal songs. While I still used my synthesizer and other electronic instruments, I wouldn’t have called the results “electronic music”.

The big change occured when I bought a Nintendo DS. The first two games I bought for it were Electroplankton and Polarium; the first was a music-making program, the second featured a subtle but grooving electronic score. These got me re-interested in electronic music, and I started looking for new music for inspiration and eventually began recording again.
